GERLAN JEANS is the first second-line without a main designer-line. A novelty in the fashion industry.
Gerlan Marcel, the designer of the New York based it-label, is fascinated by the 80s and 90s. Times, in which every luxurious brand, launched a second-line with adding ‘Jeans’ to their names, therefore the unusual name.
In her youth, Marcel spent most of her time hanging out in the malls of her hometown Oberlin, Ohio USA. She adored mainstream-brands like Benetton, Guess and Esprit. Her passion for over-dimensioned shopping malls never passed.
Her vision: GERLAN JEANS should be sold in every mall from the U.S. to China, in the close future. Her fashion should become a product of the mass. Sympathetic.
Her designs can be compared to CASSETTE PLAYA, JEREMY SCOTT and DANIEL PALILLO. A lot of prints, 90s, cartoons and irony. Gerlan had her break-through with her SS 2012 collection. She showed a mall witch dress, which firstly drew attention on her. A bustier out of ‘green slime’- A reference to the 90s kids TV channel Nickelodeon.
The list with shops, which sell GERLAN JEANS, can be seen as a ‘best of’ from stores around the world selling progressive fashion: Colette, GR8 store, Opening Ceremony and Joyrich.
The speciality of the Brooklyn-based designer, who earned her knowledge at the well-respected Central Saint Martines college, are prints. She likes to print pop-culture motives as aliens, mickey mouse and hashtags on her sporty silhouettes.
We love tribal-patterned sweat-suits, her logo-caps and pants with racing prints. Next to fashion, she presents cheese-balls and tele-controlled race cars, in her current look book. That is art, big times.
Therefore our ‘Next Big Thing’: GERLAN JEANS.
